During long-term, extreme endurance exercise (e.g. ultramarathon, triathlon, pentathlon, ultrarunning), we lose a lot of fluid, salt and minerals, especially if we do sports in high heat. Among the minerals, sodium and chlorine are excreted in the largest proportion, and magnesium to a lesser extent. Although water rehydrates the body, it does not by itself replace the basic salts necessary for the body's balance, which can lead to an upset of the electrolyte balance.
